Practical Strategy Guide > Authors

David Linstrom

Hi,

I’m a business coach that realized early in my career that most organizations didn’t reach anywhere near their full potential … because they simply didn’t understand what strategy was.

Which has always struck me as a terrible waste of human potential … because most people I’ve worked with have been bright, positive and passionate about improving their organization.

Which I guess is the main reason I’ve written this guide… to help people like you … someone who wants to make a difference.

I’ve been fortunate to be the Chairman of the New Zealand Strategic Management Society for the last 3 years - an organisation that spans academic research organizations and applied management action - promoting clearer and more effective thinking amongst business leaders.

Which is a long way from my roots as an electronic technician with the Royal New Zealand Airforce!

I also spent the best part of 5 years working as a consultant with several international performance improvement software companies.

Over the last 24 months I’ve been fine-tuning a consulting methodology that helps organizations develop and implement effective strategy … in less than 90 days.

My sincerest wish is that you find Practical Strategy useful in improving your organization.

David.

Paul Hannay

Hi,

I’m a business coach. Mostly in strategy, change management and Internet marketing.

And I’m a huge believer in doing what you love, which is my main reason for co-writing this guide - to help those of us who really want to improve our working environments.

In my early days as an electrical engineer, I realized that what the guys at the top said didn’t usually reflect the reality at the sharp end of the business.

And since then, having spent several years helping organizations improve their marketing and commercial management practices, I’ve come to the conclusion that the best leadership approach by far is:

Paint the vision
Clarify expectations
Give people the best tools you can afford
Get out of the way!

Practical Strategy dovetails with this philosophy perfectly.

And talking of tools, as the General Manager of a software services company, I learnt a lot about what makes the difference between a good and disastrous technology implementation - and not much of it has to do with technology!

I also used to put on a uniform on pretty regular basis too, as an officer in the British Army Territorials

There’s more than 3 years of our lives in Practical Strategy - we hope it helps.

Warm regards,

Paul.
